Test and comparison of TomTom for iPhone

TomTom has released on the AppStore few days ago its GPS navigation software for iPhone, which is placed in direct competition Navigon, the other browser I've had time to test earlier. The software works flawlessly and is very effective, but is not free of defect ...

Further to my first article on the iPhone GPS and your comments, take stock of software that currently exist for iPhone. Begin by paying to download from the AppStore:

* Telenav is available only to U.S. yet, but it is a lesser evil because its value against TomTom or Garmin is very low. Moreover, the application requires a subscription of $ 10 per month and a wireless Internet package ...
* Navigon MobileNavigator which I previously windy virtues as the first true GPS for iPhone
* TomTom that I present here

Then there are free to install on jailbroken iPhones:

* Xgps that I presented here, requires a mobile internet connection or pre-download maps (tedious and cumbersome in size) but has the merit of being free
* Other systems exist, such as Naviti (official site) or Ida (available on Cydia) but I have not tested. I would however be interested to review them.

From everything that exists, therefore, Tomtom for iPhone is an excellent choice for those who want a GPS software Simple, fast and efficient. Now let's see how it holds up against Navigon.

IPhone Comparison Test / Navigon
Aspect graph

The maps, drawn from the supplier TeleAtlas are represented in 3D, by default, but it is also possible to switch to 2D oriented north or not. Overall, what shocks initially, it is the color, not very pretty but a little walk in the options to change the color scheme used. Personally, I opted for the Sydney theme. It is also possible to change the color scheme for the day mode and night mode.

Note that unlike Navigon, roads are not smoothed, and their appearance is a little cube to start pushing. The integration of IP (POI) is customizable, but we did not find the brand logos (Mac Do, Peugeot, etc..) That I found rather nice on Navigon. In short, the strength of GPS is not his aesthetic.

Graphiquement, TomTom est correct mais n'impressionne pas beaucoup

Graphically, TomTom is correct but does not impress much. Note, however, the wealth of information present.

Search route

I have nothing wrong with the search address is classic and fairly intuitive. We search by country and city, street and house number. The research will be added in the recent destinations. The previous search criteria are then pre-selected in the following entries.

Then, once the address is entered, the route search is fast. In addition, several search functions to alternative route is available. It is thus possible to avoid a roadblock at a distance of around a street or crossing point difficult of access, return to the default route, etc..

Note that the default route found is generally faster (in time) than that calculated by Navigon. This is probably due to the presence of technology "IQ Routes" which apparently calculates the best route based on the user experience. This technology gives TomTom a definite advantage for the route search areas.
Navigon has a graphical rendering a little nicer

Navigon a un rendu graphique un peu plus sympa
Navigon has a graphical rendering a little nicer (logos, smooth roads, sky ,...)

Real-time navigation

Regarding navigation, strictly speaking, it is pretty clear but less (see above) and accurate than the Garmin.

Indeed, for driving on motorways, where many branches looming before us, the particulars of TomTom are not clear enough: "200 meters, take the exit right" when before us, we have 6 channels, 2 outputs right which no one immediately and one in 500 meters, we would rather have the sign of direction ... And just about this, Navigon is doing wonderfully as transcribed almost the same panels highway and indicated with an arrow clear position on where our 6 lanes ...

In terms of positioning on the motorways and the indication of exits to take, Navigon done wonders where TomTom has large gaps.

By cons, what is significant about the TomTom is that all relevant indicators are displayed simultaneously: real speed, time to destination, arrival time, remaining mileage, speed limit where Navigon requires switcher l one to another by pressing the screen.

Finally, last but not least: TomTom for iPhone loads a map of speed cameras and tells us clearly when we arrive in the right direction, near one of them.

Other Features

Other notable features are equivalent to those of Navigon: Profile of the route (driving, walking, cycling, etc..), Points of interest (restaurant, museum, gas station, etc..) With a slight advantage on this point for TomTom also referencing views and a few more schools.

We just note that the voice guidance to TomTom is selectable in an impressive list (sex / language) and better quality: the sound crackles with a high level for Navigon.

The little detail that kills you can listen to music with your iPhone while browsing! I think it's mainly reserved for those with a Bluetooth connection on their car ... If an indication appears road, TomTom is the music paused to "speak" while talking Navigon over (this remains understandable).

Conclusion

It is quite clear, with experience, the 2 GPS is excellent and almost equivalent but each have their strengths and weaknesses.
TomTom TomTom
France 69.99 EUR Price
Europe 99.99 EUR Same
Graphical Not terrible, gaudy color theme by default can be adapted Pleasant, again, the road curves are smoothed
Browse more suited to the city (IQ Route, radar, alternative route ...) More suited to the highway (location on routes, indications trips)

I advise more TomTom those circulating in the city and many are not too demanding in terms of graphics while Navigon, despite its lack of functionality of route search "bis" would position itself more as a friend of the highway ...

Finally, there is no winner in this comparison, 2 GPS systems are definitely excellent from me. We can not even separate them in their performance because they are very good on the 2 with an iPhone 3GS. The boot time is less than 10 seconds, the route searching almost instantaneous or reasonable for a long journey and the fluidity of the whole is very significant.

Afterwards, if you must choose, I can only advise you to take one that most closely matches your profile motorist: rather or rather town Hwy. Bonne route à tous!
