Testing a new GPS for iPhone: CoPilot Live

I tested for you the navigation software CoPilot Live, the latest product released by ALK. CoPilot Live is to Android, Windows Mobile and iPhone. Version of France has just been put online. CoPilot is the 1st application fee on iTunes, Section Navigation to United Kingdom and Italy at the moment, I wanted to see what value this GPS meet leaders of this type: TomTom TomTom and you can find the tests in their respective articles.

Ergonomics and Display

As you can see from the screenshot above, the default theme of CoPilot Live is rather pleasant. Unlike the competition, it is possible to customize its different day mode and night mode (which is automatic and based on local time).

The curves of the roads are smooth, fonts are legible and clear information. At the information display dashboard (speed, distance, time remaining, etc..), It is unfortunate that we can display in one or two information simultaneously, or multiple shifts, which is less complete than TomTom. Asked about this, the editor told me of his desire to keep the attention of drivers on the road and not on the GPS ...

The interface is all touch and generally well thought out, the address lookup is fairly intuitive. It should be noted that for once, it does not specify the country search for the software can search all countries at once. For cons, the keyboard is in alphabetical order and not in any configuration "standard" QWERTY, QWERTZ or QWERTY. It's confusing at first, but eventually got used to it quickly. In addition, the publisher will include this type of keyboard in a future release.

It is possible for subsequent searches of the addresses searched view or set a favorite "home" but also a favorite "work".

The voice guidance in French is clear and natural. It is possible to choose the sex and language of his "partner" from a well-stocked list.

Performance

At speed, no complaints. On my iPhone 3GS, the application launching in about ten seconds and the signal is quickly found.

In any case, the GPS is the most fluid I've seen so far and it's really nice. The refresh is done almost in real time and not once or twice per second ... Considering the amount of detail displayed on the screen is a feat!

Sometimes, I must point out that the GPS signal is lost but it seems to be rather linked to the GPS chip the iPhone, low power. This defect does not affect phones Android or Windows Mobile. Contacted about the matter, the publisher says that this defect is the cause of the way "tunnel" which, like their competitors do not work at all on the iPhone.

Features

The real added value of software lies in its numerous features, innovative and useful.

To begin, just like Navigon, CoPilot has a mode Clear Turn "which displays a real view of highway interchanges and a clear view for positioning on the right track. Another significant advantage, directional arrows tell you the next turn and the next, which can more easily anticipate the positioning on the tracks.

Like TomTom, CoPilot Aboard a base of fixed cameras and warns you so very clear when you approach one of them (in a good way) and tells you your actual speed and the speed limit. Innovation CoPilot is that it intelligently inform you of speed limits in France, but also when you move abroad.

Otherwise, as opposed to Navigon and TomTom, CoPilot integrates logos of big names on its maps. This is little more aesthetically pleasing rendering.

Among the features that I did not tested, is that of "monuments in 3D," which, as its name implies, represents the 3D buildings to give you visual cues clearer. Other notable gaps in the version I tested, the way "live traffic" and "fuel prices" were not yet available but will be essential to benefit seriously this GPS compete.

The feature "Live Weather" gives us good weather for several days to the destination or departure city, your choice. An Internet connection is obviously essential.

Finally, the features that are not tested "Live Search" (search the Internet points of interest), CoPilot OnDemand (to download the maps via the Internet which are not available yet) or LiveLink (to share its position with Friends have CoPilot) are little more undeniable, given the minimalist Garmin or TomTom, tip the scales in favor of software from ALK.

Conclusion

While TomTom and Garmin GPS are great, this newcomer CoPilot landed with the vocation to be more complete. Having the experience of three, I must say that my heart is torn between graphic rendering very pleasant and the Navigon CoPilot between function and IQ Route TomTom on the hideous and fluidity of CoPilot.

However, CoPilot has the merit of enabling navigation in city Honorable (calculated detour placement on the tracks, pedestrian mode ...) and being a co-pilot needed for highway driving (speed cameras, for real output ...).

After it is a pity that the space below is not best used as TomTom, which displays a dashboard very comprehensive, but it is possible that the publisher takes into account your remarks via the comments on iTunes, forums and blogs (so feel free to comment!). Furthermore, I believe, if the feature "live traffic" is the height, she will compete the function of TomTom IQ Routes, the last bastion of CoPilot to win the ultimate status of GPS for iPhone.

Comfortable to use, efficient and equipped with many innovative features, CoPilot is therefore placed at the intersection of TomTom and Garmin by combining the advantages of each.
