A Lost Art - Cassette Compilations

Remember when you used to make compilation tapes? It may seem like it was a lot of hassle to go through, but I remember it fondly. I used to try and make the perfect 50's compilation, or a real "hyper" tape with lots of fast tunes, or a sad song collection. Whatever happened to that? Well, CDs and mp3's is what happened. Sure, you can make compilations on CD, but it's just not the same.

For one thing, when you were taping, you had to listen to the songs as you recorded them. After hearing the first track, you'd think "what's the best track to follow that one?" and you'd flip through your records until you found the ideal song. With every new track you committed to tape, you were slowly making the best "various" tape ever!

And compilation tapes used to be great gifts. Great because you knew the person giving it to you had put in hours of work into it. They were great gifts for a girlfriend at the start of a relationship too. It's a gift that said "here's what I'm like" and at the same time "Here are some emotions I'm too shy to express, but these songs will". They were an insight into someone. Now what can we do? Transfer a bunch of tunes to a USB memory stick? What kind of gift is that? It's just not the same.

Thankfully, I still have a tape deck and a bunch of tapes I made, and some that people gave me. I still enjoy them. Don't throw those old cassettes away. Give them a listen. Somebody put a lot of work into them. Maybe you.
