Windows drivers are the interface between your devices and Windows. In order to use all the features of your devices you need to use the latest drivers. By using the latest drivers you also get the best performance and hopefully the flaws in the earlier versions have been fixed. You can update your Windows drivers in a couple of different ways.
The most basic way of updating your device drivers is to do everything manually. You visit the websites of each of your hardware vendors. This could mean you have to visit a lot of websites. On each website, you check what is the latest driver version for your device. Then you check what driver version you have installed on your PC. If your version is older, you download the new driver from the vendor website and install it manually on your PC. Needless to say, this quickly becomes a time-consuming task, especially if you manage more than one PC.
Rather than doing everything manually, some hardware devices come with software that can check for new drivers on the vendor website. You will be asked if you want to download and install a new driver. This saves you some time but you still have to accept or reject every single driver update manually. Another drawback is that not all hardware has this feature.
A slightly more sophisticated way of updating your Windows drivers is to let Windows manage your device drivers. This may sound like the best solution but it has a couple of drawbacks. Windows will only look for certified drivers at Microsoft's website. Windows does not worry about if the drivers are up-to-date or not. As long as the driver is certified by Microsoft, Windows is happy. This will be true even if some features supported by the hardware are not available due to an outdated driver. All in all, letting Windows update your drivers is an easy option but many of your drivers may be out of date.
The best way of keeping your Windows drivers up-to-date, is to let software keep track of your driver versions. Once the software detects that a newer driver is available, it will automatically download it and install it for you. Once installed, the software automatically keeps your drivers up-to-date. This is a nice feature if you have one PC, but it is really a life-saver if you have a couple of PCs to administer.
